From the wise minds at Citizens’ Impeachment:

Is there popular support for impeachment?

A majority of Americans already supported impeachment before any members of Congress introduced articles. There are now multiple articles filed, in part due to our activism. The polling linked above shows that impeachment isn’t a strictly partisan idea; there are also independents and Republicans who recognize the need to impeach.

But we’ve tried it and it hasn’t worked?

If your coffee isn’t sweet enough because you only added one packet of sugar, that doesn’t mean sugar won’t work. It means you didn’t add enough. Twice impeached during his first term and twice attempted this term, each try at impeachment is one more pack of sugar. We are seeing support building all the time, and it will take more tries - possibly a few - before we can get impeachment AND conviction - which is when it really matters.

How do we build even more support for impeachment?

The first step, filing articles of impeachment, has begun. These initial resolutions will kickstart conversation amongst representatives so that we can find supporters and co-sponsors. The media will mention the articles, and even more Americans will find out about the justifications for impeachment. From here until removal, we will be working tirelessly to rally support and get the votes we need in both the House and the Senate. If you value our democracy, join us to defend it! Sign up for updates on our coordinated actions, and talk about impeachment with your community and with your members of Congress.

Is Trump too popular to be impeached?

Trump is not popular and does not have popular support. Trump has the lowest approval rating of any president in the past 80 years at this point in their term.

Will impeachment make Trump popular?

Trump’s approval rating remains at a historical low. There is zero evidence that impeachment will somehow make him popular. On the contrary, his approval rating has remained historically low, even after both of his previous impeachments. Remember, after his first impeachment, Trump lost re-election. After his second impeachment, his party performed historically poorly in the midterm elections. Notably, candidates who were explicitly supportive of the January 6th insurrection performed even worse than those who were not.

Is impeachment possible with the Republicans controlling the House?

Yes. A single member of the House of Representatives can bring articles of impeachment to the House floor. The Republicans’ control of the House does not stop any member from bringing articles to the floor. Rule IX empowers any single representative to force a vote on their articles of impeachment within two working days. Even if Rule IX were changed, a simple majority in the House could still get a vote on impeachment through.

Can a trial happen?

Yes, a trial can happen, even in a Republican-controlled Senate. The Republicans controlled the Senate during Trump’s first impeachment, and the trial lasted nearly a month.

Should we wait until after midterm elections?

Trump has proven to be lawless and anti-democratic — we cannot wait for midterm elections in the hopes that Democrats will gain seats. It has been merely a few months and he has already attacked election rules and begun destroying our federal government. Waiting for midterms is unbelievably dangerous, given the trajectory toward unfair, anti-democratic election processes. We cannot stay in this abusive relationship; we must not wait until midterms. In any case, the likely difference from a Democratic landslide at midterms would be only five or six votes.

Can we actually remove Trump?

Yes, he will leave if we rely on our country’s laws. The country has not yet been corrupted enough for the military to side with Trump rather than Congress, the judicial branch, and the American people. Fear of angering Trump cannot be a reason for avoiding action. Trump must be removed.

What happens if JD Vance becomes president?

If Vance takes office as president, we will hold him accountable to the law. In the event Vance proves as dangerous and unlawful as Trump, we can remove him from office as well.

Why not use the 25th amendment?

Impeachment is the most expedient, lawful approach for conviction and removal. Removal via the 25th amendment is more difficult in that it requires a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate. It also requires Trump’s own cabinet to sign off, which is highly unlikely to happen. Impeachment will pass in the House with a simple majority, made up of any representatives who are moved to support it.
