What do I do when I show up?
Get settled.
Get to town and sink into that home base for a second. Relax for a moment in the place you’ll be sleeping at night. You’ll need full social batteries for what you’re about to do, and it’s going to be good to take a breath first.
Find a friend.
Maybe you’ve made an appointment with a Mayday Movement USA volunteer to do some training for what to say when you show up in congress and find a working partner. Maybe you’ve decided to attend one of the NOVA Friday power lunches. Maybe you just want to drop by FLARE and talk to one of the people at the 24/7 Union Station protest site about their experiences. They’ve always got a story to share. These people and places can make sure you’re not doing this alone and couldn’t be happier that you’ve decided to come to DC and help us fight for democracy.
Parking
If it’s a weekday during the day, paid parking is the way to go. If you’re visiting Capitol Hill, parking in the Union Station garage is easiest and closest. Weekends and evenings look on side streets and you can usually find something reasonable or free wherever you’re at.
Other Stuff
If it’s not time to work yet and you’re curious, DC is a FABULOUS city to explore. It has an endless stream of magnificent restaurants, bars, and parks. The National Mall is loaded with a nearly endless supply of free museums during the day, and walking the monuments at night is both safe and magical.
What to Bring
It surprises most people that DC is a borderline temperate rainforest. Rain can happen at any time, the humidity is fierce, and plant life is abundant. Be sure to pack accordingly. Aside from that, there’s nothing extra to prepare, and you’ll find it like traveling to most other places.
Have fun out there while you’re not trying to save the world! It’s a great city!
